Hillary Clinton on Tuesday became the latest Democrat to support changing the name of the Washington Redskins football team.
“I think it is insensitive, and I think that there is no reason for it to continue as a name of a team in our nation’s capital,” she said in an interview with Fusion.
“I would love to see the owners think hard about what they could substitute,” she added.
{mosads}Clinton did not volunteer any possible new names for the franchise.
“No. I haven’t thought a lot about [it],” she said.
Clinton, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, joins a growing list of Democratic leaders who have called for a name change.
Nearly every Democratic leader has already come out in support of dropping the team name, including President Obama, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). The president has said he would consider changing the name if he were the team’s owner.
In May, 50 senators — all caucusing with Democrats — sent a letter to the NFL urging the league to force the team to change its name, calling it a “racial slur.” Only five Democrats did not sign on.
The team maintains that the name presents a respectful image.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in June, though, voted to revoke the trademark status of some Redskins logos. The ruling has not taken effect pending appeal.
