In a possible preview of a presidential campaign plan of attack, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) called Hillary Clinton “disconnected” from the middle class.
During a tour of Iowa this week, he told The Washington Post that Clinton’s book tour has shown “how disconnected she is from the middle class.” Iowa is the home of the first presidential nominating contest.
{mosads}Clinton came under fire for saying that she was “dead broke” after leaving the White House.
“To make a comment about how woeful her finances were when she’s worth supposedly between $100 million and $200 million — most of us, myself included, can’t imagine that much money,” Paul said.
The Post reports that Clinton’s last financial disclosure, in 2012, put her maximum net worth at $25 million, though the exact number has not been disclosed.
Paul also hit Clinton on the Benghazi attacks and the U.S. intervention in Libya in 2011. “There are some who call Libya ‘Hillary’s war.’ She was all for it,” Paul said. “And if you look objectively at Libya now, it’s a jihadist wonderland there.”
The U.S. had to evacuate its embassy in Libya last month because of clashes around the facility.
Paul’s tours of Iowa and criticism of Clinton are strong indicators he may run for president.
“I don’t know why Iowa keeps popping up on my calendar, but it seems to be pretty frequent,” he told reporters.
