Report: Inouye called Gillibrand ‘chubby’

The late Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) was the lawmaker who called Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y) “chubby,” according to a report in The New York Times.

{mosads}The report cites unidentified “people with knowledge of the incident” and says Gillibrand’s office declined to confirm or deny it.

Gillibrand caused a stir, when she recounted in her new book, Off the Sidelines, stories of male lawmakers making inappropriate remarks about her appearance. Gillibrand, however, declined to reveal the identities of those members of Congress, leaving the matter somewhat of a mystery.

The full quote, now reported to be from Inouye, is: “Don’t lose too much weight now. I like my girls chubby!”

Inouye, a respected figure on Capitol Hill, was the longest-serving senator when he died in 2012. The World War II veteran chaired the powerful Appropriations Committee.

The Times points out that Inouye’s hairdresser accused him of sexual assault in 1992, and some spoke of others, but the claims eventually faded from the public eye.
