Bill Clinton: I can say anything unless my wife ‘might run for something’

Former President Bill Clinton on Wednesday joked about his need not to make headlines, as Hillary Clinton considers a presidential run.

{mosads}”The great thing about not being president anymore is you can just say whatever you want,” Clinton said at a speech to the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Then he paused.

“Unless your wife might run for something, then you can say whatever you want as long as you don’t make any headlines,” he added, to laughs.

Clinton has, at times in fact, drawn headlines for his comments, such as when he agreed last month in Iowa that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was “not the guy” to make peace.

In the 2008 primary battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, Bill Clinton drew fire for calling claims by Obama a “fairy tale” in the run-up to the South Carolina primary.

Clinton was speaking Wednesday at his presidential library in Little Rock, Ark., and touched on the upcoming presidential election in another way.

He said of crime policies in the United States that we “sent everybody to jail for too long,” according to MSNBC.

“I think in this next step, where we’re going to be apparently debating all this, and as the presidential election approaches, we’ll start to have a discussion of all of this,” he added.
