Jar of Vaseline thrown at Maine governor

A meeting featuring Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) was disrupted Thursday when a former mayor threw a jar of Vaseline at the stage while being pulled out of the room by security. 

The incident occurred at a town-hall meeting where LePage was discussing his proposed budget, CBS 13 reported.

The jar was a reference to comments LePage made in 2013, when he said that Democratic state Sen. Troy Jackson “claims to be for the people but he’s the first one to give it to the people without providing Vaseline.”

{mosads}Joanne Twomey, a former state legislator and mayor of Biddeford, a city of about 21,000, reportedly yelled a question at LePage during the meeting. Video recorded by CBS 13 shows her moving toward the stage as security officers approach to stop her.

Twomey got close enough to the stage to toss the jar of Vaseline in the direction of LePage as the officers pulled her away and out of the room. 

“Oh yes, I threw the jar at the stage,” she told the television station, which also reported that she had not been arrested.

The meeting ended after the exchange.

LePage is known for his outsized persona. He has called the IRS “the new Gestapo,” referring to the secret police in Nazi Germany, and once joked while sitting in a fighter jet simulator that he would like to blow up the offices of the Portland Press-Herald.

He was reelected by a 5-point margin last year in a three-way race.
