Nearly a third of Republicans support the Obama administration’s nuclear deal with Iran, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Wednesday.
Thirty-one percent say they support the deal, compared to 30 percent who oppose it and 40 percent who are unsure, according to the poll.
{mosads}Among Democrats, 50 percent support the deal, 10 percent oppose it and 39 percent are unsure. Independents are similarly split, with 33 percent voicing support, 21 percent opposed and 45 percent unsure.
The framework deal announced last week would lift sanctions on Iran in exchange for limits to Iran’s nuclear program. Negotiators are working to finalize the deal by the end of June.
Lawmakers in both parties have criticized the deal, though complaints from the GOP have been louder. In the Senate, support is building for legislation to allow Congress to review the deal.
The White House opposes that legislation as well as another bill that would impose sanctions on Iran, and has warned both measures could kill the talks.
The results of the Reuters poll are similar to a Washington Post/ABC News poll administered just before last week’s deadline for a framework, which found 47 percent of Republicans and 68 percent of Democrats in support.
In the Reuters poll, six in 10 Republicans said the U.S. should keep a hard line with Iran by maintaining or expanding sanctions, while about a quarter of Democrats, 23 percent, support such a move.
The survey of 2,291 U.S. adults was conducted April 3-7 after the framework deal was unveiled.
