Apple CEO Tim Cook on Tuesday poked at White House counselor Kellyanne Conway’s coining of the phrase “alternative facts.”
Speaking at the Free Expression Awards in Washington, D.C., Cook emphasized the importance of listening to different viewpoints.
“We must be open to alternative points of view, not alternative facts,” Cook said, according to 9to5Mac.
{mosads}Conway said during a TV appearance in January that White House secretary Sean Spicer’s insistence that President Trump’s inauguration had the largest crowd ever was “alternative facts.”
“You’re saying it’s a falsehood. And they’re giving, Sean Spicer, our press secretary, gave alternative facts to that,” Conway told NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Conway faced major criticism for her use of the term and later said the media should have let her mistake slide.
Cook during his speech at the Newseum also discussed the importance of the First Amendment.
“Free speech isn’t only about speaking, it’s about listening, whether or not we agree. It demands we stay informed,” he reportedly said.
