The University of Florida has rejected a request to rent space by a group helmed by white supremacist Richard Spencer, citing safety concerns after the deadly Charlottesville, Va., attack, The Associated Press reported Wednesday.
W. Kent Fuchs, the president of the university, said the school had evaluated safety and risks following the attack in central Virginia on Saturday at a white nationalist rally meant to protest the removal of a Confederate statue.
{mosads}Fuchs described Spencer’s comments about race as “repugnant and counter to everything the university and this nation stands for,” the AP said.
Spencer’s group had sought to rent space for a September event at the university.
One person died and multiple others were injured after a driver with alleged ties to racist groups rammed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters at the “Unite the Right” rally over the weekend.
