Trump ’embarrassed and pissed’ after backing losing Alabama Senate candidate: report

President Trump was “embarrassed and pissed” after the candidate he endorsed in Alabama’s GOP Senate runoff election lost, fueling a late-night tirade against his staff and GOP leaders, CNN is reporting.

Trump reportedly felt misled by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who had pressured allies to support Sen. Luther Strange, the GOP establishment-backed candidate in the election who lost to former judge Roy Moore on Tuesday in the race for Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s Senate seat.

The president had previously expressed his discomfort with his endorsement, saying at a rally for Strange late last week that he “might have made a mistake.” 

{mosads}Trump’s former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, made a high-profile endorsement of Moore, an unabashed conservative evangelical who ran on an anti-establishment platform. 

Bannon, who returned to the pro-Trump Breitbart News website after leaving the White House, said at a rally for Moore that McConnell and the GOP establishment will soon face their “day of reckoning.” 

A GOP White House adviser told CNN that “losing is bad for his brand,” noting Trump’s penchant for “winners.” 

Trump tweeted early Wednesday that he had spoken to Moore after watching the results on Air Force One, adding that Moore “sounds like a really great guy who ran a fantastic race.”

Previous tweets in support of Strange on the president’s Twitter account were also deleted.
