The mother of a child killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting has responded to Sunday night’s mass shooting at a Las Vegas concert.
Nelba Márquez-Greene, whose 6-year-old daughter was killed when a gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, wrote on Twitter that Congress is to blame for not taking action against gun violence.
“This is on every congressperson who said in ‘13: There is simply nothing we could do,” Márquez-Greene wrote.
In a series of 18 tweets, Márquez-Greene criticized the idea that the shooting was a result of political divisions that have arisen since President Trump’s election.
“Oh, please. Newtown happened well before trump was elected,” she wrote. “We need sensible gun legislation and we need it now.”

Márquez-Greene wrote that the 58 deaths in the Las Vegas shooting, the deadliest mass shooting in the nation’s history, give her “50+ new reasons” to “take a knee,” in reference to the NFL protests against racial injustice.
“In America we value guns, flags & fake acts of patriotism over people, pain & real acts of courage,” she wrote.
She also addressed the conversations about race that often follow mass shooting incidents.
“I know so many mothers navigating this world of grief and trauma blindly because their kids died in urban centers & there is no sympathy,” Márquez-Greene wrote. “Guess what folks? Gun violence and grief hurt in EVERY zip code. In every color. Grieving mothers need your help.”
At least 58 people died and more than 500 others were injured after gunfire broke out at a country music festival in Las Vegas, authorities said early Monday.
