Seth Meyers mocks Flake: It took ‘kinda-sorta guts’ to stand up to Trump now

“Late Night” host Seth Meyers jabbed at Sen. Jeff Flake for having “kinda-sorta guts” for accusing President Trump of demoralizing behavior while the Arizona Republican announced his retirement on Tuesday afternoon.

“Way to eventually go, it took kinda-sorta guts to stand up 11 months after the election and tell America not to elect Donald Trump,” Meyers said on NBC on Tuesday night. “You said ‘hey, I don’t care if this hurts my 18 percent approval rating.'”

Flake, who had faced a difficult 2018 primary challenge from the right before announcing he would not run, accused Trump on the Senate floor of taking part in “reckless, outrageous and undignified behavior,” which he said he would no longer stand behind.

“‘But I’m gonna stand up and do what was right, a year ago,'” said Meyers, blaming the senator for not speaking out sooner. “‘I’m gonna fight for the American people, by quitting my job of fighting for the American people.'”

Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday morning after Flake’s speech, saying the reason that he and Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), another Trump critic, were not seeking reelection is because they had “zero chance of being elected.”

Flake stated for the record in a Wednesday interview that he did not vote for Donald Trump for president.

“I would love to have a Republican president, but not at any cost,” he told NBC’s Matt Lauer.
