Alabama GOP chair: ‘America needs us’ to vote Roy Moore

The chairwoman of the Alabama Republican Party on Monday doubled down on President Trump’s attacks against Senate candidate Doug Jones (D), telling state voters that “America needs us” to vote for embattled GOP candidate Roy Moore.

State GOP chairwoman Terry Latham, like Trump, linked Jones to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.), arguing the Alabamian would do as his leaders told him on key issues.

“No left wing liberal for sanctuary cities, full term abortion and huddling with Schumer and Pelosi,” Lathan tweeted, echoing comments from Trump just a day earlier.

The Alabama seat is in play for Democrats because of allegations of sexual misconduct against Moore.

Multiple women have alleged that Moore made advances to them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s. One woman said she was 14 years old when Moore initiated a sexual encounter with her.

{mosads}Trump last week appeared to back Moore after supporting his primary opponent earlier this summer, and downplayed the allegations against him, adding he doesn’t want a liberal in the Senate seat.

“He denies it. He totally denies it,” Trump said. “Roy Moore denies it — that’s all I can say.”

On Sunday, Trump went after Jones more explicitly, calling him weak on crime and bad for the military.

Election day in Alabama is Dec. 12.

Numerous Republicans have called on Moore to step aside in the race.

Moore has been defiant, refusing to drop out and calling the allegations an effort by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to steal the election from Alabama voters.
