The eldest son of the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro killed himself on Thursday night, according to multiple reports.
CubaDebate, a Cuban news website, reports that Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, 68, took his life Thursday morning.
According to the news site, Diaz-Balart had fallen into a “deep depression” and had been seeking medical attention. {mosads}
“His delicate health situation required hospitalization and then continued with outpatient follow-ups,” according to another website, CiberCuba.
MSNBC confirmed the reports with Cuban government officials.
Diaz-Balart, also known as “Fidelito,” worked as a nuclear physicist after studying in the Soviet Union, and recently served as the vice president of Cuba’s Academy of Sciences.
His father, Fidel Castro, died last year at age 90.
