Ex-Trump campaign adviser: President sitting with Mueller would be ‘fraught with peril’

A former senior adviser for the Trump campaign said Monday he wouldn’t advise President Trump to sit down for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller, saying the encounter would be “fraught with peril.”

“I wouldn’t advise it. I hope he doesn’t, but I think he looks like he wants to, and that’s going to be a situation fraught with peril,” Michael Caputo told CNN’s “New Day.”

“I think anybody sitting in front of a special prosecutor stands a chance of a process crime like unintentionally lying,” Caputo said.

{mosads}“Unintentionally lying? You must intend to lie, by definition,” host Chris Cuomo interjected.

Caputo added that, in most cases, witnesses in a federal investigation choose to “lawyer up” even if they’re innocent to ensure they avoid any process crimes.

The New York Times reported Saturday that Mueller’s team has provided Trump’s lawyers with a list of questions as the two continue to negotiate a possible interview.

Trump said earlier this year he would commit to an interview with Mueller “under oath,” but later refused to commit to such a sit-down, claiming the interview wouldn’t be necessary.

In recent days, Trump has lashed out at the FBI and the Mueller probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, saying the investigation should never have been started, and attacking the makeup of Mueller’s team.
