Conservative pollster: ‘I think the Republicans are in deep trouble’
Conservative pollster Frank Luntz said on Sunday that he believes Republicans are in danger of losing both chambers of Congress in this year’s midterm elections.
“I think the Republicans are in deep trouble in the House and the Senate as well. If the election were held today, frankly, I think Republicans would lose both,” Luntz said on Fox News.
“If Donald Trump wants to keep a Republican Congress, he has to differentiate when he’s attacking Congress in general versus the Republicans in Congress. Differentiate when he’s attacking the press versus when he feels he’s not getting a fair shake,” he continued.
{mosads}Luntz said that while the economy has done well, the president largely has not gotten credit for it. He suggested President Trump could draw more attention to his successes by tweeting less and focusing on the economy rather than attacking the press or other lawmakers.
Numerous polls in recent weeks have shown Democrats with a lead over Republicans on a generic midterm ballot. A Quinnipiac University poll released last month showed Democrats holding a 10-point advantage.
Republican leaders have warned of potential losses in the midterms.
Democrats need to flip 23 seats in order to take back the House.
In the Senate, Republicans hold a 51-49 edge, though several Democrats are up for reelection in states Trump won in 2016.
