Jenna Bush Hager: Barbara Bush ‘in great spirits’

Jenna Bush Hager, the granddaughter of former first lady Barbara Bush, said her grandmother is “in great spirits” after the former first lady announced that she would not seek medical treatment for her “failing health.”

“She’s in great spirits and she’s a fighter, she’s an enforcer. She reminded me not to believe everything you read,” Bush Hager, the daughter of former President George W. Bush, said on NBC’s “Today” on Monday morning. “We’re grateful for her, for everybody’s prayers and thoughts and just know the world is better because she’s in it.”

Bush, 92, has been married to former President George H.W. Bush for 73 years. She is the mother of George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R).

On Sunday, a Bush family spokesman announced that the former first lady will not seek additional medical treatment following a number of hospitalizations and will instead focus on comfort care.

{mosads}“It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself — thanks to her abiding faith — but for others,” read the statement shared by spokesman Jim McGrath.

“She’s with my grandpa, the man she’s loved for over 73 years. They are surrounded by family, but I think the fact that they’re together in this and he still says, ‘I love you Barbie,’ every night is pretty remarkable,” Bush Hager added on Monday.
