Roughly a dozen people have been stranded in a neighborhood in Hawaii amid ongoing eruptions from the Kilauea volcano.

CNN reported Sunday that the residents chose to remain in the area despite warnings from Hawaiian officials that lava would cut off evacuation routes. Authorities will attempt to airlift individuals out of the neighborhood if the lava spreads further.

Kilauea has been erupting for the past four weeks, destroying dozens of homes and prompting evacuations by those who live near the volcano.

Residents in Hawaii’s Kapoho area were told to evacuate by Friday afternoon or face being arrested, CNN reported. However, a handful of residents said they had nowhere else to go and chose instead to remain in their homes.

The eruption has cut power, cell reception and county water in the area, CNN reported.

Kilauea, which is located on Hawaii’s Big Island, began erupting more than a month ago. Lava has spread onto roads and into neighborhoods since, destroying property and infrastructure.
