Spicer: I believe Trump is a truthful person

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Thursday that he believes President Trump is a truthful person.

“I believe so,” Spicer said when asked by “Today” host Savannah Guthrie whether he thinks the president is truthful. Spicer called Trump “the ultimate salesman.”

“He uses hyperbole to sell issues, and that’s how he is,” Spicer said. “He’s a salesman and a negotiator and a businessman first and foremost.”

Spicer memorably defended Trump’s inaccurate claim that his inauguration crowd was the “largest ever,” as well as the president’s unfounded claim that millions of people voted illegally in the 2016 election.

“Are there things I wish I could have a do over on? Absolutely,” Spicer said Thursday. In January, he largely took the blame for the inauguration crowd size gaffe, saying Trump was not happy with his performance at the podium.

Trump frequently makes false, misleading, inaccurate or unfounded claims on Twitter and at campaign rallies, as well as overstating the effect his administration has had on the economy or international alliances.

The Washington Post found that, through the end of May, the president had made 3,251 false or misleading claims since taking office.
