John McCain made a politically adept move distancing himself from former Sen. Phil Gramm after the Texas Republican called the United States a “nation of whiners” suffering from a “mental recession,” writes Ed Morrissey, who calls Gramm a valuable economic adviser. McCain raised $22 million in June, his best month yet and a good sign given the slower news cycle and his campaign disorganization, according to Morrissey.
