California Dem on possible 2020 bid: ‘I’ll make decisions after November about my future’

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) reportedly isn’t ruling out a run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.

After reportedly making his 10th trip to Iowa since President Trump’s inauguration, Swalwell told The Mercury News that he will “make decisions after November about my future.”

“Right now my focus is to win at home, earn my way back to Washington to represent my constituents, help other candidates win so we can change the country,” he told the newspaper.

Swalwell represents California’s 15th congressional district, which includes part of the Bay Area, and has served in Congress since 2013. He has spent more time in Iowa since Trump’s inauguration than any other potential Democratic presidential candidate, according to The Mercury News.

Swalwell is a frequent critic of President Trump. He told Hill.TV in July that Trump’s refusal to testify in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation was delaying the end of the investigation. He later warned Trump that if he fires Mueller, “we fire you.”

Swalwell also introduced a bill last month that would make it a criminal offense for Trump and his family to use the presidency to enrich themselves.

“Unlike other Presidents, Donald Trump has failed to distance himself from his private business interests while serving our nation, and so he and his family are getting richer from Trump companies that receive money and benefits from foreign powers,” Swalwell said in a statement at the time.
