House GOP leaders vow to make good on promises to voters

The second- and third-ranking House GOP leaders said Republicans, who appear poised to retake the majority in the House next year, would follow through on their promises.

“Tonight’s election, I think, speaks to the fact that the American people want a federal government who listens to them,” House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said on NBC. “People want to see more jobs for more Americans. And we’re going to be focused on delivering results.”

Several major news agencies have projected Republicans will win a majority of House seats in  tonight’s election, victories that would make Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) the likely Speaker of the House. Cantor is seen as likely to ascend to the position of majority leader. The party was up 12 seats at 10:30 p.m. EST.

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), the chairman of the House Republican Conference, welcomed his party’s win in similar terms.

“Republicans have not just been given a new majority in Congress, Republicans have been given a second chance,” he said in a statement. “House Republicans will welcome our new generation of leaders with open arms and work every day to deserve the confidence the American people have placed in us. And we will work to re-establish American exceptionalism rather than denying or apologizing for it.”

Boehner hasn’t made any public statements yet about the election results that appear to have catapulted him into the top political position in the House.
