GOP ‘no’ vote on budget: ‘Be like Governor Walker in Wisconsin’

A Republican on the House Budget Committee explained his “no” vote on the GOP budget proposal Monday: “It didn’t cut enough.”

“It wasn’t necessarily the most popular vote amongst some Republicans,” Rep. John Campbell (R-Calif.) said on Fox News.

{mosads}Campbell noted that an amendment to take non-security spending back to 2008 levels failed, and decried an increase in defense spending.

“There is as much waste in defense as in any other part of the budget and
it’s something we need not to reflexively just increase all the time,” he said.

Campbell said the most important reason for his “no” vote was the deficit.

“We’re headed for a debt crisis, like Greece or Ireland or whatever,” he said. “I
don’t know if it’s going to be a year, three years, five years, but
we’re headed for one and when we get to that, it will make 2008’s
collapse seem like nothing.”

Campbell said that the deficit had to be brought down fast “or we are headed for a crisis where you’re going to be cutting things by 50 percent.”

He said that the bill won’t clear the Senate, but the congressman suggested a figure lawmakers could look to when it comes to austerity.

“I mean, be like Governor Walker in Wisconsin,” Campbell said. “And take the strong stand that really will fix the problem.”

Campbell said he’ll dig in his heels on an emergency extension to avert a government shutdown, too.

“I’m not voting for a level funding,” he said. “It’s going to have to cut. I don’t
care if it extends the budget for 24 hours. If it doesn’t reduce
spending and by some reasonable amount, then this member of Congress is
not voting for it.”
