Rep. Maloney to wed same-sex partner
Rep. Sean Maloney (D-N.Y.) is set to be the second sitting congressman to marry a same-sex partner.
Maloney’s office on Tuesday announced his engagement to his partner of 21 years, Randy Florke.
{mosads}”After 21 years together, we are excited for the next step in our journey as a family,” they said in a statement released by Maloney’s office. “For decades, we’ve fought to ensure that all families can experience the joys of loving commitment and we are proud to have our friends and family share this special moment with us in the near future.”
The freshman Democrat represents New York’s 18th District, which he won in a narrow victory over Rep. Nan Hayworth (R-N.Y.) in 2012.
Maloney and Florke have three adopted children. The two got engaged on Christmas Day and have not yet announced a wedding date, according to CNN, which first reported the news.
In 2012, Barney Frank became the first congressman to wed his same-sex partner. Another freshman congressman, Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), married his husband in 2006 in Canada before entering Congress.
“Congrats to my good friend @RepSeanMaloney on his engagement. I wish you two many more years of happiness,” Pocan tweeted Tuesday.
