Yellen prefers gender-neutral title of Fed ‘chair’

The incoming head of the Federal Reserve System wants to make her new title gender-neutral.

Janet Yellen, whom the Senate confirmed earlier this month, wants to change her new title to “chair” instead of “chairman” or “chairwoman,” according to the Associated Press.

{mosads}On Feb. 1, Yellen will take over the board, becoming the first woman to lead it. The Fed was created in 1913. 

Yellen used the same title working as outgoing Chairman Ben Bernanke’s deputy. She identified as the Fed’s vice chair.

The first woman to serve as vice chair, Alice Rivlin, also preferred the gender-neutral title, the AP reports. 

Yellen succeeds Bernanke, who has served as chairman of the bank since the George W. Bush administration in 2006.
