Report: John Edwards gets trial delay for ‘life-threatening heart condition’

Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has a “life-threatening heart condition that will require surgery in February,” according to a report by The Associated Press.

{mosads}Edwards’s attorneys were seeking a 60-day delay in his trial for alleged campaign finance violations, asking for the former senator to be given time for an operation and recovery.

As part of that request, the federal judge overseeing Edwards’s felony case on Friday revealed two letters from a cardiologist confirming the condition.

The judge delayed the trial until March 26, according to the AP report.

In June, Edwards pleaded not guilty to six federal charges alleging that he made false statements and violated campaign contribution laws.

The charges came after more than two years of investigations into whether Edwards used nearly $1 million in campaign donations to hide his affair and the child he fathered with former aide Rielle Hunter.
