Carter cuts short trip over health worries

Former President Jimmy Carter left the South American nation of Guyana early on Sunday amid concerns over his health.

{mosads}Carter Center officials said Carter, 90, would return to Atlanta sooner than expected, according to The Associated Press.

They said the 39th president was “not feeling well” but did not divulge additional details, the news service added.

Carter was visiting Guyana to observe its presidential election on Monday.

He has personally witnessed 39 international elections during his charity work with the Carter Center, a nonprofit organization after he exited office in 1981.

It has since conducted 100 missions overseas, including Sunday’s Guyana visit, the AP reported.

Guyana’s elections are over a year past due as President Donald Ramotar has suspended Parliament to avoid a no-confidence vote.

Monday’s election will see his People’s Progressive Party face off with an opposition coalition for Guyanese voters.
