Coldplay singer honors Beau Biden at funeral
Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin honored Beau Biden on Saturday by performing during his funeral service in Wilmington Del.
The British musician gave a somber solo recital at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church before Vice President Joe Biden and other loved ones.
Martin sang his band’s “Til Kingdom Come,” playing an acoustic guitar while accompanied by an organ.
{mosads}“Steal my heart and hold my tongue,” he sang. “I feel my time, my time has come.”
“For you, I’d wait, til kingdom come. Until my day, my day is done.”
“And say you’ll come, and set me free – Just say you’ll wait, you’ll wait for me.”
Martin embraced Vice President Joe Biden and other Biden family members afterward.
Also present were Beau Biden’s mother, Jill Biden, his wife, Hallie Biden and their two children, Hunter and Natalie Biden.
White House pool reports said Beau Biden was a dedicated Coldplay fan before his death May 30 after a two-year struggle with brain cancer.
Hunter and Natalie Biden have repeatedly celebrated their father’s love for the band’s music.
Martin heard about their loss through a family friend and offered his voice during their mourning.
Beau Biden served as Delaware’s Democratic attorney general between 2007 and earlier this year.
He was also a member of his state’s National Guard, winning a Bronze Star for his service there.
Army Chief of Staff Raymond Odierno, Beau Biden’s commanding general during his tour of Iraq, also awarded his comrade the Legion of Merit on Saturday.
“Beau Biden possessed the traits I have witnessed in only the greatest leaders,” he told mourners. “Beau was an extraordinary person, and we will cherish memories of him for a lifetime.”
President Obama delivered his own warm recollections during the mass’s central eulogy on Saturday.
“He was a soldier who dodged glory and exuded true humility,” Obama said.
“[He was] A prosecutor who defended the defenseless,” he added. “The rare politician who collected more fans than foes and the rare public figure who prioritized private life above all else.”
Beau Biden passed away at age 46. He had reportedly been mulling a 2016 Delaware gubernatorial run before his death.
Coldplay has won seven Grammy Awards and garnered 25 nominations since 2002.
