First lady to edit issue of ‘More’

First lady Michelle Obama is adding “guest magazine editor” to her resumé.

Obama is guest editing the July/August issue of More, a lifestyle publication aimed at women ages 30 to 65, The New York Times said on Thursday.

{mosads}“The idea of having Mrs. Obama serve as the first guest editor of ‘More’ seemed like a crazy idea,” said Lesley Jane Seymour, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, according to The New York Times. “But it was at the top of the list for me.”

The New York Times said the issue, running at 148 pages, will hit newsstands on June 23.

Obama helped plot the layout of its articles and columns, many of which reflect the first lady’s personal interests and projects.

“Everything is linked to Mrs. Obama,” Seymour said. “Every column was done from her point of view.”

“I call her my inspirer in chief,” she added. “She really is such an inspirational figure. And that really is the mission of this issue.”

The Times said one feature article will reveal Obama’s favorite White House photos. She also helped pen columns on multiple topics.

One column is linked to Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative, which aims at curbing childhood obesity, and another appears in the magazine’s travel section.

That piece, The New York Times said, will feature Obama highlighting national parks and memorials worth visiting.

Mount Rushmore, the Grand Canyon and The Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site in Topeka are some of her recommendations.

Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, meanwhile, penned a column called “The Feminist Mistake” for the issue.

The Times said “More” was introduced in 1998 by the Meredith Corp.

It competes with Real Simple and Martha Stewart Living for readers and often covers beauty, style, health and aging.

Obama called women “the ultimate multitaskers” in an interview for the issue.

“We should never underestimate our abilities to effectuate change in the world and in our communities, and especially in our own communities,” she said. 

“So hopefully readers will take a little bit of that away as they read through the issue,” Obama said.
