Watchdog: As many as 24,000 Lerner emails lost

The IRS investigator looking into Lois Lerner’s missing emails believes there could be as many as 24,000 messages missing, according to CNN.

The Treasury inspector general for tax administration (TIGTA) has recovered more than 1,000 emails the House Oversight Committee did not receive from the IRS, according to the report.

{mosads}TIGTA had in April recovered roughly 6,400 emails not turned over by the IRS.

The IRS said last year that Lerner’s computer crashed in 2011, losing an unknown number of her emails over the prior two years.

“Prior to our investigation and our efforts to recover Ms. Lerner’s missing e-mails; the IRS did not search for, review or examine the two separate sources of backup tapes, the server hard drives, or the loaner laptops that ultimately produced new, previously undisclosed e-mails,” TIGTA will testify to the House Oversight Committee on Thursday, according to CNN.

Lerner, formerly the director of the Exempt Organizations Unit of the IRS, was a key figure in allegations that the agency targeted conservative organizations seeking tax-exempt status.
