Vice President Joe Biden referred to his son’s recent death as an “open wound” on Tuesday as he continues to press on after the tragedy.
“I got off a plane today at the airbase and I met a whole bunch of military folks there waiting to see me,” Biden said in Colorado, according to
CNN.
{mosads}”They all made reference to my son and his military service and expressed their condolences. And although it’s still kind of an open wound, it gave me a sense of strength knowing they all meant it.”
Biden’s son Beau, the former Delaware attorney general and military veteran, died almost two months ago from brain cancer. His young death at 46 had a deep impact on Biden, who had previously lost his first wife and younger sister in a car crash in 1972, just before Biden took office in the Senate.
President Obama honored Beau Biden’s “
life of meaning” with a eulogy at his funeral in June.
“He was a soldier who dodged glory and exuded true humility. A prosecutor who defended the defenseless. The rare politician who collected more fans than foes and the rare public figure who prioritized his private life above all else,” the president said then.
In the weeks following Beau’s death, the vice president and his family stepped out of the public eye to grieve together. Now, Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, have both returned to a full schedule, with Biden working to whip support for the nuclear deal with Iran.
