Sunday shows preview: Wasserman Schultz on the hot seat

Ahead of a packed fall schedule, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), will sit down this weekend with CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Wasserman Schultz’s appearance comes as Congress is expected to take up a resolution of disapproval next week on President Obama’s Iran nuclear deal.

The Florida Democrat is still on the fence over the deal even as momentum has grown behind the agreement during the August recess, with the White House securing enough votes in the Senate to ensure an eventual win.

{mosads}Wasserman Schultz is being torn between her district, which includes a significant Jewish population, and the expectation that she use her leadership role to support the Democratic president.

Vice President Joe Biden pitched the Iran deal to Jewish leaders in her district earlier this week, but 61 percent of Florida voters are against the deal, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released last month, with 25 percent supporting it.

Wasserman Schultz is also facing fierce criticism over the Democratic presidential primary’s debate schedule, with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley suggesting the DNC is bolstering frontrunner Hillary Clinton.

The DNC announced earlier this year that there would be six primary debates — roughly one-quarter of the number offered during the 2008 primary, and half of the number given to Republican candidates this cycle.

Sanders has accused the DNC of being “dead wrong” in its debate strategy, while O’Malley called the debate schedule “rigged” to benefit Clinton.

“I think it’s a big mistake for us as a party to circle the wagons around the inevitable front-runner,” O’Malley said late last month.

Wasserman Schultz, however, has rejected criticism of the schedule.

She said the schuleded debates give “ample opportunity to hear from our candidates about their vision for our country’s future” and “highlight the clear contrast between the values of the Democratic Party which is focused on strengthening the middle class versus Republicans.”

Here’s the rest of Sunday’s expected guests across all five major news networks:

ABC’s “This Week”: Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, both of whom are running for the Republican presidential nomination, will discuss the 2016 campaign, while Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is expected to sit down with Martha Raddatz.

David Miliband, the president and CEO of the International Rescue Committee, will also discuss the ongoing refugee crisis, which drew mass attention this week after the photo of a three-year-old Syrian boy who drowned while trying to make it to Greece went viral on social media.

CBS’ “Face the Nation”: Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, will discuss her strategy for the next presidential debate and whether she believes Donald Trump will stick to a pledge to not run as a third-party candidate.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich will also weigh in on the 2016 presidential election.

CNN’s “State of the Union”: In addition to Wasserman Schultz, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) will discuss the president’s trip to her home state and the 2016 election.

Fox News’ “Fox News Sunday”: Former Vice President Dick Cheney and his daughter Liz Cheney will weigh in on the Iran nuclear deal, Obama’s foreign policy and discuss their new book, “Exceptional: Why the World Needs a Powerful America.”

Meanwhile, Philadelphia police chief Charles Ramsey and Milwaukee police chief Edward Flynn will talk about an increase violent crime and the recent murder of Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth in Texas.

NBC’s “Meet the Press”: Former Secretary of State Colin Powell will discuss the nuclear deal with Iran ahead of what’s expected to be a contentious debate next week in Congress.

ALF-CIO President Richard Trumka is also set to appear on the show ahead of Labor Day.
