Mortar attacks kill 3 at UN base in Mali

A mortar attack on a United Nations base in Mali on Saturday killed at least three people and left 20 injured.

The strike came eight days after 20 people were killed in an attack on a luxury hotel in Bamako, Mali’s capital.

{mosads}Two U.N. peacekeepers and a contractor were killed in the attack, and four of the injured are still in serious condition.

A Kidal resident told the Associated Press that about six shells were fired by attackers at dawn.

The U.N. said the attacks will not discourage them from working toward a lasting peace in Mali.

“I want to reiterate that these attacks will not impede the determination of the United Nations to support the Malian people and the peace process,” Mongi Hamdi, head of the U.N. mission in Mali, told the AP.

“I express my solidarity and salute the brave men and women serving throughout the country for their efforts to bringing lasting peace to Mali in these difficult conditions.”

Mali has been politically unstable following a military coup in 2012 in which the West African country fell to Tuareg separatists and then Islamic extremists.
