DNC head calls for action after Planned Parenthood shooting
Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) says America must address a “national epidemic” of gun violence following the shooting in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday that left three dead, including one police officer.
“We don’t know all of the details about this particular incident, but we do know that our national epidemic of gun violence must be addressed,” Wasserman Schlultz said in a statement Saturday.
{mosads}“We must recommit to ensuring our communities are safe from these all-too-common acts of gun violence, which have claimed the lives of over ten thousand of our fellow Americans every single year since 2000,” she added.
The Florida lawmaker said Americans should not have to worry about gun violence in their day-to-day lives.
“Parents shouldn’t have to fear for their children’s lives dropped them off at school in the morning,” she said. “Americans shouldn’t have to fear going to the movies or other public places where someone with a gun can inflict mass terror.
“Women shouldn’t have to fear for their lives to access basic health services or exercise their constitutionally-protected right to choose,” she added.
The motive of the assailant, who exchanged fire with police from a Planned Parenthood clinic for several hours before he was detained, is unknown.
Wasserman Schultz expressed condolences for the families of the victims who were killed in the attack.
“The families in Colorado affected by this attack on Planned Parenthood are in our thoughts today, especially the family of Officer Garrett Swasey who was killed in the line of duty, and the families of the two civilians who also died in last night’s attack,” she said in the statement.
“We give thanks to the law enforcement officers who acted bravely to apprehend the suspect.”
President Obama said in a statement Saturday that if America “truly cares about” the shooting, “then we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them.”
