Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson buys Nevada’s largest paper

Billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson has purchased the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Nevada’s largest daily newspaper, according to Fortune

Multiple sources confirmed to the business magazine that the casino tycoon had purchased the newspaper.

{mosads}The Review-Journal published a front-page article Wednesday detailing Adelson’s potential ties with its new ownership.

News + Media Capital Group LLC purchased the publication and its sister outlets for $140 million last week, Fortune reported.

The manager of News + Media, Michael Schroeder, was once an executive at BostonNOW, a defunct free daily newspaper in Adelson’s hometown.

Russel Pergament, another former executive at BostonNOW, helped finance the creation of the Jewish News Service (JNS). JNS has an exclusive agreement for distributing content from Israel Hayom, an Israeli newspaper that Adelson owns.

Fortune said Wednesday that Adelson and Schroeder have each refused repeated requests for comment.

The sale follows Tuesday night’s fifth GOP presidential debate, which was conducted at The Venetian casino hotel, owned by Adelson, in Las Vegas. Adelson reportedly met with Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump before the contest there.

The casino mogul is one of the most influential donors in the Republican Party. He backed former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) in the 2012 race before throwing his support behind Mitt Romney, the eventual Republican nominee.
