Rubio: Obama would take away our guns ‘if he could’
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) is defending his claim that President Barack Obama wants to take away Americans’ guns.
{mosads}“If he could, he would,” he said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”
When asked by host George Stephanopoulos to point to an instance where the president has called for taking away guns, the Republican presidential candidate said Obama’s proposals “infringe on the Second Amendment.”
“There’s a terrorist attack in San Bernardino; before even the facts are known, he immediately jumps and says, we need gun control,” Rubio said.
“But take away our guns?” Stephanopoulous asked.
“That is what he always resorts to,” Rubio responded. “Obviously he knows he’s contained by the Second Amendment so what he tries to do is chip away at it every chance he gets.”
In a town hall meeting, Obama defended his executive actions expanding background checks last week, repeatedly slamming the “conspiracy” that claims he wants to take Americans’ guns away.
“A lot of folks own guns. And so this is not, like, alien territory to me,” Obama said at the CNN-hosted event.
“He is trying to keep guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens by continuing to put new restrictions on our guns,” Rubio countered Sunday.
