GOP lawmaker: Trump would ‘put America at risk’

A Republican lawmaker says that Donald Trump would “put America at risk” as president.

Rep. Scott Rigell (R-Va.), fresh off declaring that he would not support Trump as the nominee and urging other Republicans to do the same, said Tuesday that Trump is “not a Republican.”

{mosads}”Fundamentally, he is not a person who is equipped in temperament, judgment or character to lead our troops, and that’s critical to me,” Rigell said on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports.”

“I think that his presidency, should he get to that point, would put America at risk,” the outgoing lawmaker, who is backing Trump rival Marco Rubio, continued. “I fundamentally believe that.”

“And so, my conscience can be clear only if I have been clear on this matter, and that is that I reject Trump and I’m encouraging other Republicans to do the same today,” he added.

His comments come on Super Tuesday, when voters in his home state of Virginia and 11 other states hold voting in the GOP race where Trump is the prohibitive front-runner.

Rigell, who penned an open letter denouncing Trump, joins Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) in vowing not to support Trump should the businessman lock up the GOP nomination.
