Former NATO Commander Wesley Clark on Sunday blamed Belgium’s security services for allowing the terrorist attacks in Brussels.
{mosads}“Actually I’m not surprised, because they’ve had a fundamental problem in Brussels for over 20 years,” Clark said in a radio interview with John Catismatidis.
Clark said that the competing languages in Belgian law enforcement agencies make them inefficient.
“They don’t have good internal security. They didn’t have good internal security 20 years ago,” he added.
Clark was stationed in Brussels as Supreme Allied Commander of NATO from 1997 to 2000.
The retired general said that the terrorists chose Brussels as a target because it was the “easiest place to strike, because I think in all the cities in Europe, this one probably has the least effective internal security.”
Clark also called on European nations to better control their borders and step up their law enforcement efforts.
“They certainly need to tighten up the borders, they also need to tighten up the way they share information between various national police forces, local police forces and international organizations. There’s a lot of things that need to be done there,” he said.
