Former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) said in an interview released Wednesday that Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump’s flaws would ultimately doom him if he becomes the nominee.
“Donald Trump, if he’s the nominee, with 65 percent negatives, is not going to be our president,” Weiner said on The Huffington Post’s “Candidate Confessional” podcast.
{mosads}”I just know that that’s the case. I had that problem.”
Weiner, who resigned from Congress in 2011, compared Trump’s campaign to his own failed bid for mayor of New York City two years later.
“When you’re in a five-way race, having 40 percent negatives is not disqualifying … [as] Donald Trump will attest,” he said.
Weiner, who was involved in a second sexting scandal during his failed mayoral bid, noted the lack of negative ads against him at the end of that race because of his low poll numbers.
But Weiner said he could see a negative ad blitz in the future that targets Trump, an effort that could seriously hurt the real estate mogul. He added that Trump is an easy target.
“It’s funny. I hadn’t thought ’til right this moment about how many Trump parallels there are to [my] race,” Weiner said.
