Ben Carson on Thursday accused a CNN anchor of having a criminal background while attempting to defend Donald Trump’s embattled campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski.
“I don’t see any reason, quite frankly, that we should demonize him. If you can come up with a good reason I’ll listen to it,” the former White House hopeful said of Lewandowski on CNN’s “At This Hour.”
{mosads}CNN co-anchor John Berman noted that Lewandowski has been charged with a misdemeanor battery following an incident with a reporter last month.
“A lot of people think that is a reason,” Berman said.
“Well, I mean a lot of people have been charged with various things. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we need to demonize them,” Carson responded.
“You’ve probably been charged with something too, maybe with a misdemeanor or something,” Carson speculated as Berman and co-anchor Kate Bolduan exchanged looks. “It doesn’t mean that you’re an evil, horrible person.”
“I actually haven’t, as far as I know,” interjected Berman, putting him his hands and showing a slightly puzzled look.
After the interview, Berman posted video of the exchange, quipping, “Then there was the time Ben Carson suggested I committed a crime…on TV.”

Also in the interview, Carson doubled down on his belief that there is “probably” a better presidential candidate than Trump.
“Obviously, there’s always going to be someone who’s better at virtually anything. That doesn’t mean that you’re not good, but of course there are always better people at everything.”
