Vehicle in UN ambassador’s convoy kills boy

An armored jeep in United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power’s motorcade hit and killed a boy in Cameroon on Monday after he ran into the street, The Associated Press reported.

The accident happened near Moloko, located in northern Cameroon. Power and her aides were planning to meet with refugees and others who have been displaced by conflict in the region.

{mosads}The vehicles in the motorcade were going upwards of 60 mph at times, and people lined up on the side of the road as the cars went by.

The sixth car in the convoy wasn’t able to stop in time when the boy ran onto the two-lane highway, the AP reported. The driver was Cameroonian.

After hitting the boy, the car stopped but was then ordered to continue through the unsecured area by American security forces.

An ambulance in the U.S. convoy immediately treated the boy, who was then brought to a local hospital where he died.

Power returned to the area later and met with the family of the 7-year-old to “offer our profound condolences and our grief and heartbreak.”

The boy was not immediately identified by officials, according to the AP. The motorcade moved at a significantly slower pace for the rest of the day.
