Mexican judge: ‘El Chapo’ extradition can proceed
Mexico’s federal court authority says a judge has ruled that drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán can be extradited to the United States, according to multiple reports.
The Associated Press said the country’s foreign ministry has 20 days to decide whether to approve his extradition to the U.S., which has been in the works for months, to face drug trafficking and other charges.
{mosads}One of Guzmán’s lawyers told Reuters that extraditing him now would be a violation of his human rights, and he said there are nine appeals pending against the extradition.
Guzmán, who was recaptured by Mexican authorities in January after a months-long manhunt, was moved to a high-security federal prison in Ciudad Juárez near the U.S. border over the weekend.
