GOP senator facing Trump questions: I thought I was here to discuss foreign policy

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) in an interview Sunday dodged a question about whether it is realistic to expect Mexico to pay for the border wall that presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has proposed.

“I thought this interview was going to be more about the foreign policy arena,” Corker, who is the chairman Senate Foreign Relations Committee and who is supporting Trump, said on ABC’s “This Week.”

{mosads}”I think he has a tremendous opportunity there.”

Corker said he didn’t want to debate the “nuances” of Trump’s statements about Mexico paying for a wall along the United States’s southern border.

When pressed further, Corker said that Congress will debate how the wall is paid for and how the security measures are put in place.

“But securing our border has been something that people on both sides of the aisle have supported for years,” he said.

“And we need to do that. And it’s understandable that it’s become an issue because it’s lingered for so long.”

He said there is bipartisan agreement that the country needs better security.

“I hope that we will implement that,” he said, “because it is a security threat to our nation.”
