NC Dem introduces resolution to honor Muhammad Ali

A House resolution honoring Muhammad Ali was introduced Tuesday.

{mosads}Rep. G. K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), introduced a measure to recognize the “extraordinary life, accomplishments, and countless contributions” of Ali, who died last week at the age of 74.

The boxing legend is also remembered as a civil rights icon and for his many humanitarian accomplishments.

Butterfield said in a statement on Wednesday that Ali “stood on principle to end racism and bigotry.”

“More than a boxing legend, Mr. Ali was a humanitarian of the world and his talents transcended the ring into the global community where he selflessly put the interests of helping others above his own,” he added. “He was a great American, the greatest among athletes of his time and a true champion for humanity.”

The resolution has 42 co-sponsors. Rep. Mia Love (Utah), a CBC member, is the measure’s sole Republican co-sponsor so far.

Butterfield’s office said the resolution is being circulated on Wednesday for additional cosponsors.
