Kasich signs medical marijuana bill into law in Ohio

Ohio Gov. John Kasich signed a bill into law Wednesday allowing physicians to prescribe medical marijuana to treat health conditions.

The bill had passed the General Assembly on May 25, The Columbus Dispatch reported. The governor signed the bill within a couple if hours of it making it to his desk.

{mosads}According to the law, which will take effect in 90 days, the medical marijuana must be available within two years.

Marijuana products could be tested and available within 15 months, State Sen. Dave Burke said. The state senator said people could be growing marijuana in the state within a year.

The law creates a “seed-to-sale” system for growing, testing and dispensing marijuana for 20 medical conditions.

Under the law, there will be a 12-person commission that advises state agencies.

The Department of Commerce, Ohio Pharmacy Board and Ohio Medical Board will help to write rules regarding medical marijuana to be approved by a legislative panel.

People in Ohio were largely in support of medical marijuana, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

“This is a joyous day for the thousands of Ohioans who will finally be able to safely access much-needed medicine,” said Ohioans for Medical Marijuana spokesman Aaron Marshall. “We still have much work ahead of us to improve this imperfect law.”
