GOP will push to block IRS access to nonprofit donor data
Congress will vote next week on a bill that would prevent the IRS from requesting the personal information of people who donate to nonprofit groups, The Washington Examiner reported.
{mosads}The bill, sponsored by House Republicans, is a response to a 2012 IRS leak of the names of donors to the National Organization for Marriage, which included then-GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
Sponsored by Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.), the bill would prevent the IRS from requesting the identities of donors to 501(c) organizations as part of the groups’ annual returns.
“As we have seen over the last several years, the IRS has exploited sensitive taxpayer information to penalize tax-exempt organizations that do not align with certain political beliefs,” House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-Texas) told The Examiner.
“By eliminating invasive reporting requirements in current law, this legislation will protect taxpayers’ identities and prevent the IRS from improperly targeting particular organizations.”
