Hastert reports to prison

Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) on Wednesday reported to a Minnesota prison to serve his 15-month sentence, The Associated Press reported.

{mosads}A federal judge ordered Hastert to report to prison on June 22 to begin his sentence for bank crimes linked to hush money he paid to a victim he had sexually abused.

Hastert arrived at the federal prison around noon on Wednesday. His Washington-based attorney, Thomas Green, confirmed to the AP earlier this month that Hastert would report to the Federal Medical Center in Rochester, Minn.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin mentioned the facility as an option during Hastert’s April sentencing, noting its medical services. Hastert suffered a stroke late last year.

Durkin branded Hastert, 74, a “serial child molester” when announcing his sentence in the case, which revealed the decades-old sexual abuse.

Hastert was also ordered to pay a $250,000 fine and undergo two years of supervised release after pleading guilty to one count of structuring bank transactions.

He acknowledged his past abuse during his sentencing, admitting he “mistreated” several former student-athletes.
