The FBI is investigating a hack of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) that may be related to the cyberattack earlier this year on the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Reuters reports.
The cyber intrusion at the DCCC, the fundraising arm for House Democrats, may have been intended to get information on donors, sources told the news outlet. The invasion of the organization’s computer system could have begun as recently as June, sources told Reuters.
{mosads}The news service reported that a spoof website was registered with a name closely resembling a site connected to the DCCC and that donors were being routed to the fake site, according to sources.
The DNC breach was first reported in June. Damaging emails taken from the DNC were published over the weekend by WikiLeaks and caused an uproar among Democrats. WikiLeaks has indicated it has more material related to the U.S. it plans to release.
U.S. officials have a “high confidence” that the Russian government was behind the theft of the DNC email trove, though the Director of National Intelligence James Clapper on Thursday said the intelligence community wasn’t ready to officially identify the responsible party.
