Poll: Clinton extends lead on handling foreign policy

Hillary Clinton has shored up support on a range of issues in a new poll and now holds a huge lead over Donald Trump on handling foreign policy issues.

Nearly 6 in 10 registered voters, 59 percent, trust Clinton on foreign policy compared to 36 percent for Trump in the CNN/ORC International poll.

{mosads}That’s a 23-point lead for Clinton compared to a poll conducted a week earlier, July 22–24, which had her leading by just 5 points, 50 to 45 percent.

Clinton bashed Trump over his stance on Russia, and Democrats went after Russian actors following a breach and leak of damaging emails from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) days before the Democratic National Convention.

Trump said he hoped Russia was able to obtain Clinton’s deleted emails from her time as secretary of State, which was widely viewed as Trump inviting an outside country to aid his candidacy. He later said he was being sarcastic.

Nearly twice as many respondents in the new poll, 61 percent, thought it was a bigger concern that Russian hackers were able to steal emails from the DNC than those who thought it was a concern Trump would suggest Russian hackers try to get Clinton’s emails, 31 percent.

Clinton’s numbers have also increased from mid-July on handling terrorism, the economy and immigration.

Clinton and Trump are now trusted equally on handling terrorism, with 48 percent of registered voters saying they trust each one to handle the issue. That’s an 11-point swing from a poll conducted last month, representing a 6-point increase for Clinton and 5-point decline for Trump.

Clinton is supported by 50 percent to Trump’s 48 percent on handling the economy, while 55 percent support her on immigration compared to 43 percent for Trump. Clinton is better trusted on nominating justices to the Supreme Court, trade and healthcare, while Trump is slightly more trusted on gun policy.

More than half of Americans, 57 percent, are dissatisfied with their options for president this year, the poll found, while 42 percent are satisfied.

The CNN/ORC poll of 1,003 adults including 894 registered voters was conducted July 29–31 via telephone with a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points for registered voters.
