An Iranian nuclear scientist who gave information to the United States about Tehran’s nuclear program has been executed, according to multiple reports.
{mosads}Shahram Amiri, who was hanged for treason, gave “vital information to the enemy,” a spokesman for the Iranian judiciary told the BBC.
Amiri had disappeared in 2009 after going on a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. He then reappeared a year later in a series of online videos filmed in the United States, where he said he had been interrogated by the CIA.
Amiri said he was put under “intense psychological pressure to reveal sensitive information.”
Officials in the United States said at the time Amiri had provided the country with “useful information.”
He then went to the Iranian interests section at the Pakistani Embassy in Washington and said he wanted to be sent home, according to The Associated Press.
He initially was welcomed back by officials and family members.
In May 2011, however, Amiri was arrested and tried for treason. He was serving a prison sentence.
His body was reportedly handed over to his mother with rope marks around the neck.
