Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) said Donald Trump still has a good chance to win in November despite recent polling that shows the GOP nominee behind Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
{mosads}”First of all, 8 points down at this stage, of course you’d rather be ahead, but I remember George Bush the first being 16 points down to [Michael] Dukakis going into September. So let’s, you know, calm down,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.”
“Everyone should calm down about it. There’s certainly every opportunity for Trump to win this election.”
Several recent polls have shown Trump behind his presidential opponent both nationally and in battleground states.
In the RealClearPolitics average of national polls, Clinton has a 7-point lead over Trump, 47.5 percent to 40.5 percent.
The GOP nominee has also faced backlash recently over some of his recent comments, including his criticism of the family Humayun Khan, an Army captain killed in 2004 in Iraq.
Giuliani in the interview Sunday also attacked Clinton, saying he thinks her comments just don’t get as much attention as Trump’s.
“For example, she lied to a Gold Star mother. She lied to Patricia Smith, the mother of Sean Smith, who was killed at Benghazi, I believe, because of her incompetence, her incompetence in failing to secure that mission,” he said.
“And she lied to her on Sept. 14, 2012, right at the coffin. She said it was due to a video,” he continued.
Republicans frequently attack the former secretary of State’s handling of the 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya. Shortly after the bloodshed, which left four Americans dead, Clinton and other top officials said an anti-Muslim video led to the incident. It was actually a coordinated terrorist attack.
“So I think that’s far more serious — or at least it should get as much attention as all of the attention that was paid to, you know, the comments that were made about the Khan family.”
